Nicks Kids Golf TournamentTUSCALOOSA | Father’s Day doesn’t officially arrive until Sunday but University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban continued a tradition of tribute to his father with his Nick’s Kids Foundation golf tournament at NorthRiver Yacht Club on Thursday afternoon.

“This is really my dad’s legacy,” Saban said as he was coming off the golf course. “He started Pop Warner football in West Virginia. He went out in a school bus to pick up those kids who didn’t have transportation so that they could participate. He did those things so kids would have an opportunity. Terry and I have been doing this (Nick’s Kids) for 10 years now. Last year, we were able to give to 78 Active Imagedifferent organizations around the state and hopefully we’ll be able to do more this year.”

The golf event featured a number of celebrity participants including former Crimson Tide players like Jarrett Johnson, Freddie Roach, Antonio London, Antonio Langham and others. Former U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate and UA head men’s golf coach Jay Seawall held a clinic for participants prior to the event.

ESPN on Nick Saban

Ivan Maisel of ESPN recently wrote an article on Nick Saban and included the following about his charity... Nicks Kids Fund.

Since their arrival in Alabama, the Sabans have become benefactors to charities that help children around the state. That is something that could go a long way toward repairing an image. Saban forbid Walker from putting out a press release to say that the Nick's Kids Fund Golf Tournament, which Nick and Terry Saban hosted last spring, raised $130,000.

"I don't make it public because I don't want people to think that," Saban said. "That's not the motivation. We did it at Miami. We did it at LSU. We did it at Michigan State [where he was head coach during 1995-99] … when I wasn't getting hammered all over the place."

Sabans Make Scholarship Gift

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — During halftime of the January 9 Alabama-LSU basketball game, new UA head football coach Nick Saban presented UA President Dr. Robert E. Witt with a $100,000 check to provide student scholarships. The donation from the coach and his wife, Terry, will fund scholarships for students who are first in their families to attend college.

“Getting a college education impacts the quality of your life forever,” said Nick Saban. “Helping provide opportunities to students who wouldn’t otherwise have them is one of the best ways we know to help all students reach their highest potential.”

The Sabans bring to Tuscaloosa a commitment to civic and community involvement. “As a part of The University of Alabama, it is important to me and my family that we share our blessings with others,” said Terry Saban. “We are proud and fortunate that this university community has welcomed us with open arms. It was our first order of business to present this gift which provides scholarships for first generation college students of families in Alabama.”

Recipients of the Saban scholarships will be announced later this spring.

“Terry and Nick have a long history of giving back to the community,” said Witt. “This generous contribution to our scholarship fund clearly demonstrates one of their highest priorities, which is to provide opportunities for every student to be successful in life. We value their commitment to education, to students and to our community.”

The couple supported several charitable and civic projects in Louisiana. The largest of those efforts was with the Children’s Miracle Network, for which Terry and Nick raised more than $100,000 a year for children.

Nick Saban added, “Hopefully, this will be the first of many sharing gifts as we make Alabama our home.”
